Towards the end of the summer of 2023, I got a message from my aunt saying that she’d found something I’d like immensely. Anyone who knows me knows how much I love the oceans and their inhabitants, and the message from my aunt was not at all unsolicited. For she had found an educational trip to Veli Losinj, where marine biologists from Blue World would impart their knowledge to us. After a few days of thinking, I decided that I would take this trip and use the money I had saved from my part-time job in a meaningful way. I contacted Sasha from Planet Lover and all I had to do was wait patiently. My journey started on 7.5.2024 when I boarded a train going from Liptovský Mikuláš to Bratislava. The next morning we travelled to Croatia. After resting and sleeping, our first day started with a lecture about dolphins. I found out that dolphins also have their favourite food and that you can tell by the bone in the fish’s ear. I loved that we were able to try it out after the lecture. The biologists from Blue World prepared great activities for us. A short break was followed by a presentation on sea turtles. We learned about their life cycle and what threatens them. At the end we tried to identify the types of turtle preparations. The second day started for me with boarding the motorboat. Our task was to find the Bottlenose Dolphin. In Croatian they call him “the good dolphin” which I found very endearing. We sailed around the sea for a few hours and even caught a glimpse of Kareta the Giant from the boat as she went to take a breath, probably after a few hours of sleep. I enjoyed the cruise, I was able to talk to the marine biologist Marc and helped him lower the hydrophone into the water, which we could use to listen to the dolphins communicate after spotting them. I will never forget this experience. The atmosphere on the boat was perfect and we were all very excited. We saw 3 dolphins, a mother with a calf and probably a male. They were very nice and perky. We ended the day with a trip to the beautiful garden and packing up to go home.I don’t regret this trip in the least and I think it has pushed me further on my journey to my dream of becoming a marine biologist. I was able to experience, at least in some part, what it’s like to do my dream job. We had a great group of people and I look forward to getting together again someday. After returning to the mainland, we had lunch and went to the sea turtle rescue centre in Mali Lošinj. We were greeted by the lovely Mateja, who was just dealing with a new patient. She introduced us to all the turtles and allowed us to feed them. They were very sweet and some were already getting ready to go home. We tried to clean the new patient, Marco, of external parasites and I still strongly hope he is doing better. With a walk and dinner in Mali Losinj we successfully finished the second day. Day 3 was a climb up St. Ivan’s Hill and a lecture about the Blue World organization itself. We learned why it is important to protect the oceans and what can be done to do so. Protecting the Adriatic Sea is one of the main goals of the organization. Finally, we played a game in which the aim was to find a compromise with people who might be opposed to the protection of the marine area.
